Great recalls the meandering tracks of a Black family from rural Virginia to New York City in the 1940s. In the “big city,” the Mamas in this family are sex workers, surrogate mothers, spell-casters of the Southern stove, fermented truth-tellers, and magistrates of the color barrier.
